Police warn parents about candies that may get children high this Halloween

By: Walter, October 26, 2017

Beware of what’s in your kid’s candy bag!

Law enforcement officials are warning parents about gummi candies and lollipops containing cannabidiol, also known as CBD, potentially making their way to trick-or-treaters this Halloween, according WRAL.

While CBD doesn’t have the same effects as tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, found in marijuana, it is thought to leave you with a euphoric feeling.

CBD isn’t regulated by the United States Food and Drug Administration and isn’t illegal to purchase.

In fact, CBD oil is legal in more than 10 states as treatment for seizure disorders, according to the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML).

WRAL notes that the products are marked “Not a Candy” and “Keep out of reach of children” on the packaging, but some worry it’s not enough to deter kids.

‘It feels like a candy. It looks like a candy. I don’t know many children who’d turn it over and read the label,” parent Catherine Scrimshaw told WRAL.

“I mean, I have a 6-year-old who can read, and she’d say, ‘Oh, Mommy, gummi candy.’ She’d be excited about this.”

Cumberland County Sheriff Ennis Wright said his team of school resource officers has yet to come across CBD products on school property. Still, he told WRAL the color of the packaging is understandably concerning to parents.

“Being that Halloween is coming up, this package here basically favors the Halloween colors,” Wright noted.

“I want to inform these parents to ensure that they look at every piece of candy that these young people are bringing home.”
